Where Should You Live in North Pinellas County, Florida? A Local Area Guide
If you’re planning a move to the Tampa Bay area, one of the first surprises is how different neighboring towns can feel — even when they’re only 10–15 minutes apart.
North Pinellas County includes Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor (including Ozona), Dunedin, Safety Harbor, and Oldsmar.
They share beaches, weather, and proximity to Tampa… but daily life feels very different in each one.
Here’s a simple way to understand where you might feel most comfortable living.
Tarpon Springs – Character and Waterfront Living
Tarpon Springs has the strongest personality in the area. The historic sponge docks, Greek restaurants, and marina activity make it feel more like a coastal town than a suburb.
People who enjoy it most tend to like:
- water views and boating access
- a slower pace
- unique local culture
- older homes with character
Palm Harbor & Ozona – Neighborhood Comfort and Convenience
Palm Harbor is often chosen by buyers who want balance. It has quiet neighborhoods, good access to everyday shopping, and easy drives to multiple downtown areas.
Dunedin – Walkable and Social
Dunedin has one of the most active small downtowns in Pinellas County. Many residents can walk to restaurants, breweries, festivals, and the Pinellas Trail.
Safety Harbor – Quiet and Community-Oriented
Safety Harbor feels more tucked away. Its downtown is small but charming, and the waterfront parks and trails create a calm environment.
Oldsmar – Practical and Accessible
Oldsmar sits closest to Tampa, which makes commuting easier. It’s more residential and less tourism-focused than the coastal towns.
Personal Note:
My husband Chris and I chose Tarpon Springs ourselves when we decided where we wanted to settle in this area, mostly because we loved the character and waterfront feel. Our son and his wife settled in Palm Harbor for the neighborhoods and convenience, and our daughter chose Oldsmar for the easier Tampa commute but spends many weekends enjoying Safety Harbor and Philippe Park. It’s a good example of how people can love the same part of Pinellas County for very different lifestyles.
